The liver manufactures three different kinds of insulin like growth factor: IGF-1, IGF-2, and IGF-3. While IGF-1 is most commonly found in a number of over-the-counter nutritional products sold today, IGF-2 or insulin-like growth factor-2 is also finding its way onto sports nutrition shelves.
At its most basic definition, insulin-like growth factor-2 is one of the three protein hormones that are manufactured by the liver. They’re given the name insulin-like because they have a similar structure to that of insulin. The basic function of IGF-2 is to provide a vital role in growth and development processes in a developing fetus.
Some studies have focused on the ability of IGF-2 to enhanced proliferation of numerous cells in the body. While IGF-2 (gene) is extremely prevalent and active during the development of a fetus, it’s not so active after birth.
IGF-2 is composed as a cluster of genes. They are found on the short arm of chromosome 11. The H19 gene found in this cluster is also involved in development and growth. IGF-2 is known by other names that include but are not limited to:
IGF-2, a protein hormone like IGF-1, and manufactured in the liver, is heavily involved in regulating cell proliferation, migration, differentiation, and growth.
It’s also an important aspect of cellular survival. However, unlike IGF-1, it is not very prevalent in growth following the birth process.
IGF-1 is typically notable after birth and is produced (nearly exclusively) in the liver, while IGF-2 is typically produced or expressed in embryonic and fetal development as well as a number of somatic tissues.
In adults, IGF-2 expression or synthesis occurs not only in the liver, but in epithelial cells that line the brain’s surface. It can also be detected in plasma although those circulating levels of IGF-2 are at their highest when observed during fetal circulation.
While nutritional supplements of IGF-1 or products like deer antler velvet containing high levels of IGF-1 have been most popular in recent years with bodybuilders and athletes, IGF-2 is also making its way to the top of the list when it comes to physical enhancement and performance needs.
For example, one brand (Applied Nutraceuticals) manufactures IGF-2 in capsule form, marketing the product to build muscle through its main ingredient, Mucuna. The product is marketed to support normal IGF-1 levels and growth hormone ratios, with the manufacturer stating that it contains strong herbal anabolic compounds and powerful anabolic glands of those compounds.
IGF-2 Results Include Stimulating:
You’ll find a number of products today that contain IGF-1 and IGF-2, especially in homeopathic hormone supplements, deer and velvet supplements, and other nutritional supplements marketed to promote growth of muscles to their maximum size, strength, endurance, as well as recovery capabilities.
Use caution, talk to a physician about IGF-2 side effects, growth hormone and growth factors, especially if you have been diagnosed with a medical condition.
